Opportunities Available to Flight Instructors

Once you hold the appropriate training endorsement, you will be qualified to do the following:

  • Grant flight activity endorsements
  • Conduct multi-crew training
  • Conduct training for different types of aircraft
  • Conduct flight reviews
  • Train students to conduct solo flights
  • Approve students to operate aircraft while they are undergoing flight training and certification
  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Hold a Commercial Pilot Certificate with an Instrument rating
  • Be able to read, speak, and understand the English language
  • Hold a valid medical certificate
  • Pass a knowledge test and practical test

There are no minimum FAA requirements for the flight instructor certificate. However, most students average 25 hours of ground instruction, including classroom instruction techniques, before achieving competency in accordance with the FAA Flight Instructor Practical Test Standards. Each student may require more or less time depending on past experience, knowledge, and currency.
