In addition to being at least 18 years of age, you must also hold a Commercial Pilot Certificate with an Instrument rating. Along with holding a valid medical certificate, you will also need to pass two knowledge tests as well as a practical test.

 

Ground Instruction

To obtain a flight instructor certificate, there are no minimum FAA requirements for ground training, but typically, students will complete around 30 hours of ground instruction. Where CFI students will polish their Lesson plans, work on their Fundamentals of Instruction knowledge and skills, along with improving their technical knowledge,which will allow them to be competent with the FAA Flight Instructor Practical Test Standards.

 

Flight Instruction

Although students typically average around 15 hours of flight instruction prior to achieving their flight instructor certificate, there are technically no minimum FAA requirements. This, along with classroom instruction techniques, allow students to achieve competency listed in the FAA Flight Instructor Practical Test Standards. Depending on your personal strengths, experience, and knowledge, you may take more or less time to train.
